A Site For People Who Are Scared Bleepless Of Clowns
Clowns are interesting people. They dress up in loud clothing, hide their faces behind exaggerated features, do startling things such as make loud noises. They are ostensibly doing all this for the entertainment of you and me and small children everywhere.
Now consider this: How do small children usually react when clowns show up at birthday parties? They cry. Sometimes very loudly. How do large children usually react if they happen to be at the same birthday party? They try to hide the sheer terror they feel because they don't want their cowardice to get back to the kids at school who will then give him a name containing the word "clown" and some unpleasant verb, which he will carry with him until they are required to call him "Doctor".
How do adults react when unexpected clowns show up? They pretty much revert back to crying, having given up on coolness long ago. LOL Yet, for some unknown reason, they insist on spending actual money on them to get them to come to kids' birthday parties. It's an insane love-hate cycle that just won't go away. People insist on becoming clowns and everything.
In the midst of all the insanity, however, the creators of the I Hate Clowns website have stepped forth. There's a community, a testimonial and even a couple of products to buy. The "I hate mimes" T-shirt is not that interesting, but the "I can't sleep, clowns will eat me" inspires all kinds of soothing imagery.
Stephen King would never have chosen a clown as the baddie in his novel "It" if it didn't speak to something in our very souls.
Maybe it's something instinctive. Paint a huge, red mouth on a person and, not only does it no longer does it look like a person in the strictest sense, it looks like it would like nothing better than to chase you down on the Serengeti and devour you while National Geographic cameramen look on.
