Acomlia, Miracle Or Menace?

In today’s weight-conscious world, people are always on the lookout for a new miracle weight-loss pill that will help them quickly slim down without any effort on their part. One of the latest pills to hit the European market, soon to be approved in the USA, is Acomplia, also known as Rimonabant.

In clinical trials conducted over a year, a third of obese patients lost ten percent of their body weight while two thirds lost over five percent of their body weight. These results have led many to label it the new wonder drug.

Unlike other weight loss pills, which usually suppress the appetite with stimulants such as caffeine or ephedrine, Acomplia suppresses the appetite by directly affecting the endocannabinoid system, the part of the brain responsible for the urge to overeat.

Does anyone think it could possibly be a good idea to interfere with the brain? The long-term results of such tampering could be potentially devastating.

I will be the first to admit that I am lazy and love the easy way out. The fact is diet and exercise are the best and safest ways to slim down. Popping pills and deliberately altering how the brain works just can’t be a good idea, no matter how much others will say it is.

Remember, the weight loss industry is all about making money, and it stands to make billions every time a new product comes along to market as a new miracle drug.

All too often, people end up paying literally and figuratively, sometimes with their lives. Remember Ephedra and the deadly results that occurred? Don’t be fooled by empty or dangerous promises and never forget that if something seems too good to be true, it probably is.

The only time such drastic measures might be worth the potential health risks are when a person is morbidly obese and their life is in immediate danger. Otherwise, there is no reason to risk your health in such a way.
