How About A Tarantula For An Unusual Pet?

If you are prepared to take on the responsibility and work of taking care of an exotic pet, such a pet can really make your home a more interesting place. Pets can even be part of an overall decorating scheme. Together with some large-leaf jungle-type plants, pets can really make your place into a cool Amazonian abode.

Though it is advisable to choose your tarantula based on personality as opposed to color, it is fun to look at all the interesting colors and patterns on these large spiders.

It is also advisable to consider whether you actually want to physically handle a big spider. Yes, with your hands. You also have to find out whether you will have an allergic reaction to the spider's hair. Find someone who will allow you to handle a spider before you commit to one of your very own.

Though the Mexican Red Knee is probably the most recognizable (and most personable) tarantulas, it is not the most striking. One of the most striking is Haplopelma lividum, or the cobalt blue. Its fur is a gorgeous metallic shade. But, like all things beautiful, this animal should be approached with caution (i.e., by someone who knows what they're doing). This guy is reputed to have an attitude.

If you are looking for a non-aggressive pet, try Brachypelma albopilosum, the curly hair tarantula. These spiders are black, plump, and do well in captivity.

If you are ready for a real spider, try Theraphosa blondi, or the Goliath Bird Eater. It's called the Goliath Bird Eater because it is the largest spider in the world and eats birds. It is also a fiery redhead. Not only is it the largest spider in the world, it is one of the most beautiful.
