No Identification Equals No Booze
Imagine this; Your Nan is driven down to the local liquor store by a good friend of hers to get herself a nib of wine for dinner. As she pulls up to pay for the booze the stores attendant asks Nan about identification. Because Nan has her lag in a cast she got a lift from her friend to help her out and therefore forgot to bring her license, so the store attendant refuses to hand over the booze to her. Nan is 65 by the way!
Now I’m not sure, whether this attendant was short sighted or blind, but this scenario actually happened in Maine U.S. and is probably the most ridiculous story one can hear.
Back in 2005, the state legislature passed a law that anyone who looks under 27 years old must show identification before they can buy alcohol or cigarettes. This makes perfect sense to me. But how can a store owner possibly mistake a 65 year old for a person who looks younger than 27?
Now, I’m pretty sure that we can do a lot these days with cosmetic surgery, but if some surgeon found a way to shave 38 years of an older woman, wouldn’t we know about it by now?
Barbara Skapa of Maine is dumb founded by her experience. She only wanted to buy some wine and when her friend tried to step in to help her out, the assistant refused on the claim that it was considered “third party” purchasing. The supermarket chain Hannaford Bros market in Farmington stated that they check anybody’s license that looks under 45 and wanted to buy alcohol.
Barbara Skapa might get a modeling contract out of this. A woman who is 65 and gets prohibited from buying alcohol because of her missing driver’s license and her apparent suspicious young looks under 27 (which is the legislation) might have a huge potential to claim eternal youth with any skin care she chooses to market. It certainly goes to show how ridiculous our laws are these days and how certain individuals seem to struggle with common sense.
What do you think? Do you feel that Barbara should have been allowed to buy the wine or not?
If you are a multinational corporation looking to sign Barbara up for a modeling contract, then you are welcome to follow this link.
Who knows, she might be up for it.
