The National Museum Of Wood Carving

If you are looking for a museum that offers more than your typical paintings or dinosaur exhibits, you should check out the National Museum of Woodcarving. It is located in Custer, South Dakota.

The museum’s motto is "Where Wood Comes Alive", and you have to give them credit for being very accurate with that description. With several woodcarvings that will trick you into thinking they are actually alive, the National Museum of Woodcarving is much more entertaining than you might think. I would even suggest warning your young ones about the life-like nature of some of the carvings!

The reason that the carvings are so well-done is that they are not done by amateurs who are merely trying their hand at the craft. Most popular is a display of woodcarvings that were done by more than 20 of the most reputable caricature carvers in the United States. This will give you a golden opportunity to experience the many different styles of carvers from throughout the States.

One of the best things about the museum is that there is more to do than merely looking at incredible woodcarvings. There is a carving studio in which you can watch artists as they work their magic. Some of them will even describe to you what they are doing.

In addition to this, visitors to the museum are able to take classes which will help them as they seek to develop their woodcarving skills. Who knows - if you partake in one of these classes, maybe a piece of your work will end up in the museum!

Finally, the National Museum of Woodcarving has a gift shop that is unlike most. Most of the items that are on sale are collector’s items. There are a number of hand-carved figures from which to choose. The gift shop’s wide range of items is further proof that this museum is quite different than the rest.
